SOLDIERS AID SOCIETY

At  a meeting held in Sunsbury, Nov.  1st, 1861, by the ladies of Gates county, N. C., a Soldiers’ Aid Society was organized for the relief of the soldiers of the Confederate States, who have nobly enlisted in defense of our country, and as long as our services will be needed, we pledge ourselves to be thus united; both in contributing and soliciting donations from the citizens of our county.

The following officers were chosen:

            President—Mrs. Seth R. Norfleet

            1st Vice President—Mrs. Samuel Harroll

            2nd Vice President—Mrs. Costen Jordan

            3rd Vice President—Mrs. Timothy Lassiter

            4th Vice President—Mrs. Alfred Walton

            Treasurer—Mrs. Thomas Holley

            Recording Secretary—Miss Lizzie Taylor

            Corresponding Secretary—Mrs. William Beeman

            SOLICITING COMMITTEE—Mrs. Robert B. Parker, Mrs. Elisha Williams, Miss Alice Jordan, Miss Hattie Norfleet, Mrs. James K. Costen, Mrs. George Costen, Miss Mollie Lassiter, Miss Mary A. Hill, and Miss Emma Costen.
